Lantern Merge
Lantern Merge is a fast-paced line-collection puzzle game inspired by traditional Eastern aesthetics and festival symbolism. Designed around simple mechanics with escalating strategic depth, the game challenges players to align matching elements, unlock new combinations, and progress through visually immersive levels.
At the time of engagement, the game showed promising initial downloads and positive early feedback. However, engagement depth declined after the first levels. Players struggled with rule clarity, progression pacing felt uneven, and monetization opportunities were not fully integrated into the core gameplay loop — limiting long-term scalability.
Objective
Our objective was to strengthen early retention, clarify gameplay mechanics, and optimize progression and reward systems — transforming Lantern Merge into a highly engaging, replay-driven puzzle experience with scalable monetization potential.
Scope & Goals
The growth transformation focused on three key pillars:
* Improving first-session clarity and onboarding
* Enhancing progression pacing and reward feedback
* Optimizing monetization placement within gameplay flow
Key goals included:
* Increasing early-level completion rates
* Strengthening session depth and repeat play
* Improving retention across initial stages
* Enhancing perceived reward satisfaction
* Establishing a scalable live-ops foundation
Our process
The project was executed as a structured gameplay optimization — aligning mechanics, feedback systems, and player motivation into a cohesive engagement loop.
We began with a behavioral audit of early gameplay sessions, identifying friction points in rule comprehension and difficulty progression. Players were entering levels without fully understanding combination logic, leading to frustration and premature exits.
The onboarding experience was redesigned into interactive micro-tutorials embedded directly into early levels. Instead of static instruction screens, players learned through guided action, improving clarity without slowing momentum.
Progression logic was rebalanced to create smoother difficulty scaling. Early wins were made more achievable, while later levels introduced layered complexity to sustain challenge. Visual and audio feedback were amplified to reinforce successful merges and milestone completions.
Monetization elements such as boosters, extra moves, and retry options were repositioned around high-emotion moments — particularly near-miss scenarios — ensuring offers felt supportive rather than intrusive. All changes were tested iteratively to maintain gameplay integrity while enhancing revenue opportunities.
The result was a refined engagement architecture built for sustained replayability.
Results & impact
Following implementation, Lantern Merge demonstrated stronger early retention and more consistent level progression. Players advanced deeper into the game as rule clarity improved and difficulty pacing became more intuitive.
Session duration increased due to enhanced reward visibility and more satisfying merge feedback. Monetization performance strengthened as in-game offers aligned naturally with player motivation.
Most importantly, Lantern Merge evolved from a visually appealing casual puzzle into a structured progression experience — establishing a scalable framework for future level expansion, seasonal themes, and long-term player growth.
The game is now positioned not simply as a quick puzzle distraction, but as an immersive challenge built for repeat engagement and sustained momentum.
